| In Schwedt, a power station to produce steam and electricity through the incineration of paper residue and refuse derived fuels is being built
The builder and future operator of the new incineration plant is Kraftwerk
Schwedt GmbH & Co. KG (KSC), which is a joint venture by LEIPA and
E.ON Energy from Waste AG (EEW).
EEW, as a 100-percent subsidiary of E.ON Energie AG, produces environmentally
friendly electricity and process steam through the incineration of refuse
derived fuels and waste. As the market leader in the market segment of
waste incineration in Germany, EEW, together with local partners, develops,
builds and operates incineration plants with a high technical and ecological
standard.
At the end of the trial operation, the new plant should be completed by
the beginning of 2010 and then take up regular operation.
Approximately 116,000 MWh of electricity and 600,000 MWh of process steam
can then be produced each year through the incineration of a maximum of
220,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuels.
With the construction of the plant, approx. 50 new work places will be
created in the incineration plant along with further work places in the
service sector.
Project Task Distribution
Operator - LEIPA Georg Leinfelder GmbH
Management (repairs/maintenance, optimisation, invoicing) - KSC
Fuel procurement (preparation, logistics, purchasing, invoicing) - EEW
Plant supplier – Austrian Energy & Environment AG & Co KG
(AE&E)
The Starting Position of the Building Procedure
Increasing energy costs caused LEIPA to revise its energy concept
in 2004. At the same time, the arising residue of 220,000 tonnes per year
from the paper production industry had to be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly
manner. From this, a partnership between LEIPA and EEW developed.
The Objective
By reducing the annual energy costs by using refuse derived fuel and substituting
the previous primary energy provider, natural gas, with process steam
and electricity from the incineration plant, safe supply of the production
site is guaranteed. At the same time, the incineration plant ensures long-term
safe disposal of the residue arising from the production of paper on a
waste paper basis and ensures the uninterrupted operation of the paper
production industry. The energy from the residue is converted into electricity
and process steam during incineration. This makes it possible to provide
the basic load of the paper factory.
Fuels
- Residue from the paper production in Schwedt
- Refuse derived fuels (RDF)
RDF = prepared waste from commercial and household waste, without metal or toxins, low odour
- Prepared to a high quality
- With high fuel value
- Hazardous substances pre-removed
- From bio-mechanical treatment plants or mechanical treatment plants
Data compact
- 220,000 tonnes p.a. residue disposal from paper production
- 600,000 MWh p.a. steam production
- 116,000 MWh p.a. electricity production
- 136 MW thermal output
